Central market cleanup set today By Lydia C. Pendon ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has instructed the market committee overseeing the city central market to lead in the massive cleanup today and every Saturday. Mabilog said he has instructed several casual employees and members of the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) to participate in the cleanup of all market stalls including at the fish, meat and vegetable sections. The city mayor said other market concerns, including dilapidated roofing and transient stalls, will be taken up by the City Government soon. The priority now is on cleaning up the whole market and eradicate bad odor as consumers are complaining of the unsanitary environment within the market. Erring market stall owner will be meted with penalty and sanction including ejection from the market stall or table, he said. The central market is up for revitalization and redevelopment and the city council had approved a resolution separating the central market project from the main central business district (CBD). The construction is slated to start by October 7, 2014 for a two-year period with project completion on October 7, 2016.
