Central primed for SA IPT opener 21 September 2014 – Recent Louis Oosthuizen SA Junior Club Championship stars David Meyers and Marco Steyn are primed for their debut in Central Gauteng’s opening gambit against Western Province at the South African Inter-Provincial Championship at Westlake Golf Club on Monday. Steyn and Meyers will carry some hot form into the country’s premier national team event, sponsored by Tempest. Mpumalanga Open winner Meyers claimed the individual honours at the prestigious junior club championship two weeks ago, while Steyn anchored a successful title defence for Modderfontein Golf Club in Mossel Bay. The up-and-coming juniors will line-up alongside skipper Louis Taylor, Darin de Smidt, Matthew Spacey Andi Dill, Michael Dixon and Gareth Clements. The youngsters will get their baptism of fire underway against experienced Province skipper Werner Theart and Drew Denyer in the first round Foursomes. In the Singles, Steyn has been tasked to hold off experienced Aaron Russell. Russell captained Western Province to victory in 2010 and the SA IPT stalwart is Westlake’s current club champion and reigning match play champion. However, 16-year-old Steyn proved his ability to perform under pressure when he clinched the SA High School Championship title for TuksSport High School in a sudden-death play-off in June. “David and I are really excited to get going, but we are a little nervous, too,” Steyn said. “It is such an honour to be selected for the team, but it also carries a huge responsibility. We just want to get off to a solid start on Monday; a decent start will settle our nerves.” Meyers will go up against Province number one, Ian Snyman, in his Singles debut. “Darrin compared the SA IPT to the Currie Cup and that’s just what it’s like,” Meyers said. “Nothing beats the pride you feel when you put your provincial blazer on. Marco and I were welcomed into the team right away and we don’t feel any less part of the team just because we are the rookies. “This week is all about the team result and want to do our best to secure victory for Central Gauteng.” Dixon, Taylor and Clements return for a third tour of duty, while De Smidt, Spacy and Dill make their second appearance for Central Gauteng. De Smidt hopes to taste the same success that his brother, Ruan, enjoyed in 2011. “We finished a decent third in 2012, but last year we let ourselves down and we were very disappointed with our performance,” the Krugersdorp golfer said. “We’ve had a chance to play together and to become a strong, balanced unit and Marco and David are two great additions to the team. Michael is the only guy left from the team that won in Bloemfontein, three years ago. We believe it’s time to take the trophy north again.” De Smidt will face Boland Amateur Stroke Play champion Luke Trocado, Dill goes up against former professional Cameron Johnston and Clements meets Theart in the first round singles. Spacey will go head-to-head with South Africa’s number three, Gerlou Roux and Dixon will take on two-time Westlake Open champion Denyer. Taylor, playing at number one, will challenge hot junior prospect. Altin van der Merwe, a three-time winner on the Western Province Premier Amateur Tour this season.
