Centro Ashé hosts first annual Chesapeake Herb Gathering on September 28,2013 Nanjemoy, Md. – August 7, 2013 – Centro Ashé, an education center, medicinal plant sanctuary, and homestead based in Bryans Road, Md., will host the first annual Chesapeake Herb Gathering on September 28, 2013 from noon – 9 p.m. The event will feature a day of workshops, networking with local medicine makers, teachers, herbalists, healers, farmers, and more. Registration is $50 and is now open through September 20, 2013 by visiting CentroAshe.org. Kids under 9 are free. The event will be held at the Melwood Recreational Center located at 9035 Ironsides Road in Nanjemoy, Maryland 20662. Sponsored by Mountain Rose Herbs, The Rural Coalition, and MOM’s Organic Market, the event will offer communities of the Chesapeake Bay Region the first of its kind opportunity to celebrate herbal medicine as medicine of the people. Local experts will be leading classes on sustainable living, herbal medicine, natural birth, and more. The day will also feature musical entertainment, bonfire, barter market, and a vendor bazaar with handmade goods. Instructors include Molly Meehan of Centro Ashé, Suzanna Stone of Owlcraft Healing Ways, Ayo Ngozi, clinical herbalist, Nick Becker of Smile Herb Shop, local beekeeper, birthworker, and farmer Heidi Briguglio of Azure B LLC, Ayurvedic expert Ilena Gonzalez of Apurva Wellness, Charlene Marie Muhammadand of Urban Herbalist, herbalist and medicine crafter Holly Poole-Kavana of Little Red Bird Botanicals. More instructors are being added. The goal of the Chesapeake Herb Gathering and the work of Centro Ashé is to provide accessible opportunities for communities to learn about shared herbal and plant traditions. As local food movements continue to gain strength, the opportunity to look toward our gardens and forests as local medicine is ever present.
