A grant from the George R. Brown Foundation funded the Institute which originated at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. The Institute subsequently moved to the NMA headquarters in Dayton, Ohio in 1977, and later to James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where it resides today as a business center of the JMU College of Business. Through a comprehensive, 3-module program of management development and assessment sponsored by the Institute of Certified Professional Managers (ICPM), the CM certification validates a level of managerial competency and leadership potential which is recognized worldwide by the CM® professional credential. CM certification is appropriate for managers, supervisors, and leaders working in all industries and who meet the eligibility requirements established by the Institute for education and experience.
