CfP - for Conference Participants of the last ESCAS conference in Astana - Call for Contributions to an Edited Volume: The Steppe and the Sown Editors: Alima Bissenova, John Schoeberlein, Gabriel McGuire Publisher: The plan is to publish this collection with a major academic publisher with a multi-disciplinary profile and an orientation towards texts related to our region. There is also the possibility that the collection will appear as a journal special issue. Building on the 2013 Biennial Conference of the European Society for Central Asian Studies in Astana, we invite the submission of manuscripts from the conference participants for possible inclusion in an edited volume focused on the conference’s announced theme: the Steppe and the Sown. We look for papers that explore the many complexities implied by the concepts of nomadism and sedentarism and their interplay: the complex interaction between peoples typically characterized by these concepts in the course of history, the continued role of pastoral practices in present day Central Asia, the contrasting development of urban spaces, and the treatment of these themes in art and literature. We welcome papers relating to all aspects of research in the arts, humanities and social sciences on Central Asia – namely the republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, together with Xinjiang, Mongolia, Afghanistan and adjacent regions of Russia, China, Iran, South Asia and the Caucasus. Scholars and practitioners of anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art & art history, cinema, development studies, economics & finance, history, musicology, philology, political science, sociology and other related disciplines are encouraged to submit their papers. Manuscripts should be between 6000-8000 words in length, exclusive of references. British English spelling and punctuation are preferred. The manuscript should include a title, abstract, and cited references. Chicago Style parenthetical citation (author date) is preferred. Nazarbayev University will subsidize the publication of the volume and will provide editorial support. We ask that manuscripts be emailed to (escas2013@gmail ) by March 1. Manuscripts will be reviewed immediately, and authors will be notified by April.
