Chainey asked me "what I like most about my job?" Here is my answer. Chainey, thank you for your great question. I love what I do from teaching nutrition, healthy cooking to life coaching. But without a doubt, making a difference in people lives and volunteering for causes that touch my heart, those are my favorite parts of my job. I started to volunteer when I was about 14 years old. I remember my first time, I was coaching 10 to 12 years old ping pong clubs players. Those kids brought me much joy in a very difficult time of my life. Since then, I have donated endless hours to individuals, clubs, teams, nonprofit organizations, and schools. I love it, learned much from it and found it a blessing in my life. These days, I have so much going on that I need to be more careful with my time and the causes I choose. Health, from body/mind/soul perspectives, is my heart interest. I volunteer with organizations and individuals that match such interest. When I was approached by Kid Healthy, three years ago, and was asked to help them organizing a “Cooking Up Change” Competition in our communities; I knew this was a good cause for me. After the first year, I gave it some second thoughts, as I was not too happy with the food choices we were facing with the competition. Many were unhealthy to my personal view, particularly the protein sources. Deeply reflecting on it, I suddenly realized that this competition has so much more to offer than what I was simply looking at. I could see all kind of benefits in it, not just teaching nutrition, healthy cooking and presentation through the competition and its preparation. The students would learn many important life skills as well. They would learn what it means to have a sense of personal responsibility, a sense of team work, and the importance of camaderie and laughter. They would learn to embrace life challenges as sources of growth. They would learn that they may not always get what they want at first and, ultimately what matters is to keep going anyway, as it is the only way to eventually realize their dreams. Life is full of joy too and so much more. Seeing these young people grow and succeed in the last two years have brought much joy to me and, I know, to all involved in the OC organization. I would like to make a wish to finish here. I would like for more people to see "Cooking Up Change" true values and spread the competition to many more schools in the United States. Our youth health is so much more than just nutrition...
