Challenges for the Logistics Sector Inspite of having good prospects of growth, the logistics sector in India remains adversely affected due to several complexities which are holding it back. These include significant inefficiencies in transportation, poor condition of storage infrastructure, a complex tax structure, low rate of technology adoption and poor skills of the logistics professionals. It is recognized that movement of long distance bulk traffic by road is less efficient than rail. But road is still preferred over rail because of longer and uncertain transit time, important rail routes are over-saturated, rail freight tariff is higher as Indian railways follows a policy of subsidizing passenger tariff by freight tariff, less flexibility in carrying different types of products as special wagons are not easily available for carrying specialized products and railway carriage not easy for industries which cannot provide full train loads.
