Challenging fate: The inspirational journey of Hu Fenglian No wheelchair, no stick, but walking on her knees - that’s how Hu Fenglian’s life has been like for nearly 50 years. When she was just 6-months-old, Hu accidently fell into a furnace. The injuries she suffered resulted in doctors having to amputate the lower half of both her legs. Growing up, however, the Guangxi native didn’t let the handicap stop her from living a full life. Although she couldn’t work in the farms, she performed odd jobs to assist people and earn a living. At the age of 20, Hu married a local farmer. Two years later, the couple was blessed with a little girl. However, unfortunately for Hu, soon after her daughter was born, her husband abandoned them. Despite the hardships, Hu never lost hope. With her four-month daughter by her side, she began to rebuild her life. Today, Hu works at a timber factory as a formal employee, which means that she is also eligible to receive social security benefits. When asked by local reporters about her journey, Hu responded by saying, “I lost my feet, but I still had two hands. I could support myself with my hands.” And it is this zest for life that has charmed the villagers, who all hold her in high regard as an example of how with sheer will and courage one can shape ones own destiny.
