Chamber Post: Long Hill Twp., NJ: A Night at the Library Benefit! The Long Hill Township Library is having a fundraising benefit on Saturday, October 19, from 6 PM to 9PM. Come and enjoy music, cocktails, appetizers, and much more during “A Night at the Library.” While the library is happy to be your home away from home during disasters like hurricanes, snowstorms and power outages, we thought it was time to come together for a festive celebration. “All of us became dramatically aware of how important it is to have a vibrant library in our community during disasters like Hurricane Sandy,” said Mary Olesen, who volunteers her time as President of the Library Board of Trustees. “Our library served as a haven, especially for those without heat during the storm’s cold aftermath. The library offered more than a warm seat and a cup of coffee, we have the resources our town needs to get critical information in chaotic situations; we have books, magazines, DVDs, and games to help alleviate the tension and boredom that accompanies a natural disaster." Like many libraries in New Jersey, the Long Hill Township Library’s budget has been affected by the reduction in New Jersey State support and the decline of housing values. Library funding is based on township property values which have declined due to the economic downturn of recent years. Since 2009, the Library’s funding from taxes has dropped over $80,000. State support for the same period has been cut over 50%. “Now is the time for the community of Long Hill Township to strengthen the library’s economic future,” remarked Library Trustee David Kaplan. “We must look ahead to success in this endeavor and end the pattern of monetary cuts to the library.” Please mark your calendar with Library Benefit! on Saturday, October 19th from 6 til 9.
