Chamling’s celebrates 64th b’day, says bad apples gone Report by: EOI CORRESPONDENT Photo by: EOI PIKS Gangtok 22 Sep 2013 Addressing Sikkim Democratic Front supporters today at the party head office in Indira Bypass on the occasion of ‘Garib Utthan Diwas’ (Poverty Eradication Day) that coincided with his 64th birthday, SDF president and chief minister Pawan Chamling noted, “Our party is becoming purer and more valuable with each passing day as all goons and crooked personalities are going away”. Poverty Eradication Day has been observed on September 22 ever since the SDF-ruled government came to power in the state as this was the day back in 1993 when Chamling ousted his predecessor Nar Bahadur Bhandari from the seat of power. “Now, our party will flourish more and be twice blessed because gone are the days when it was surrounded by awful and atrocious personalities. We are now clean and heading in the right direction,” he said. Chamling further said, “Prem Singh Golay who remained a dissident when in government, was recently disqualified by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly from the post of MLA. I am right in my own way and place and engaged only for government and party works. The revolution we started in 1993 will continue till all exploiters disappear and till every Sikkimese becomes completely self reliant.” Earlier during the programme, SDF spokesperson Bhim Dahal remarked, “The so called Opposition in Sikkim does not deserve to be called so as they do not have the capability to remain in that position,” and in a thinly veiled rebuke targeting Golay, said, “Those who have turned their back to a party that is like a mother will not be missed. Rather, we the SDF will delete people like you from our memory.” Dahal went on attacking the ousted MLA, “If you were interested to go on a different path, you should at least have had the decency of coming to the party office and meeting the president and we could have bid adieu to you. Such a person eyeing his own vested interests cannot lead the people and will never succeed as a leader.” Meanwhile, the chief minister claimed the poor in the state totaled 42 per cent of the population when he came to power in 1993, and this has reduced drastically to just 8 per cent at present. “The poverty rate has declined significantly and we have become rich since we came to power. We are getting richer while other states in the northeast such as Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh are getting poorer,” he said. Chamling also assured of clearing bills pending across various departments during Dusshera and of distributing the pending salaries of Asha workers along with old age pensions. He added several supplementary grant demands would be passed during Assembly’s October session. The chief minister also inaugurated a new music studio, Sargam Sikkim Studio, and launched the first album recorded there. The studio, which is located near the SDF head office, claims it will offer opportunities to budding talents in Sikkim. The day’s event also saw the release of books and poetry collections by a number of writers, while the SDF Central Executive Committee felicitated the chief minister for ushering development in the state under his leadership.
