Champions League Review Blog plus Sunderland vs Southampton Hello and welcome to The Football Analyst Show and tonight we will be reviewing the games from the Champions League plus the Capital one cup tie between Sunderland and Southampton. First though well start off with the games in Group A and Uniteds game in Spain. They drew 0-0 with Real Sociedad and could have won it if Van Persie had converted his penalty after Ashley Young seemingly went down in the area but was later criticized by Ray Wilkins for diving which replays show he clearly did. Marouane Fellaini was sent off in the game which ended a dismal night for the English champions. The other game in the group between Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayer Leverkusen also finished goalless so no much to say on that. In Group B a shock result sort of as Copenhagen from Denmark beat Turkish side Galatasaray 1-0 to get their first win of the group stage and dampened the Turkish sides chance of qualifying. Juventus and Real Madrid drew 2-2 in Turin and was a very good game there. More notably for Madrid Bale and Ronaldo got their goals. In Group C Olympiakos beat Benfica 1-0 while PSG drew 1-1 at home to Anderlecht. In Group D Man City confirmed their qualification to the knockout stage for the first time as they beat CSKA Moscow 5-2 with the goals coming from a Sergio Aguero brace and a Alvaro Negredo hat trick while Seydou Doumbia scored twice in reply for the Russian side. In the other game Bayern Munich just about won against Viktoria Plzen as the game finished 1-0 to the European champions. To wednesday nights games and in Group E Chelsea went a step closer to the knockout stage as they once again beat Schalke 3-0. The goals came from a Samuel Etoo brace and one from Demba Ba. The other game involved Basel drawing 1-1 against Romanian side Steaua Bucharest. In Group F Arsenal beat German side Borussia Dortmund 1-0 away from home with the only goal coming from Aaron Ramsey who has been in great form this season and this goal might just take the group right to the wire. In the other game Napoli won 3-2 over Marseille to go joint top with Arsenal with Gonzalo Higuain bagging two of the goals for the Italians. In Group G Zenit drew 1-1 with Porto and Hulk got Zenits goal and obviously for him no celebration after his goal. Atletico Madrid secured qualifcation with a 4-0 win over Austria Vienna with Diego Costa bagging the 4th for the Spanish side. In Group H Ajax just about scraped through their game as they beat Celtic 1-0 and takes them into 3rd. Barcelona beat AC Milan 3-1 with Lionel Messi getting one of the goals for the 4 time champions. In the capital one cup game Sunderland booked their place in the quarter final and they will play Chelsea after they beat Southampton 2-1. Sebastian Larsson and Phil Bardsley scored the goals for Sunderland with Maya Yoshida scoring the reply for the Saints but the black cats held on for the win. Thank you for reading and next time well be previewing the Premier League fixtures for this weekend including a clash between Man United and Arsenal.
