Chandigarh, Sunday, Nov 9th, 2014 (Kulbir Singh Kalsi):- The second Chandigarh LitFest, Literati 2014, concluded with great pomp and show at the Lake Club. The last day of the discussions covered a vast spectrum of ancient Buddhist art, to Defence writings, The photographic archives ending with jamming notes of music. While Hindi and Panjabi writers discussed the challenges that face the new generation became the focus of discussions, their implications and impact on the changing cultural norms and the reverse of it. While Devapriya Roy, Gurpartap Khairah, and Anita Rai shared their works and process of writing in the session on “All Things Wise and Wonderful”, the young married couples of Saurav Jha and Devapriya Roy, and Krishna Shastri Devalapalli and Chitra Viraraghavan, exchanged notes on being married and yet engaging in the creative process with equal passion. The authors were all commendation for the ambiance, meaningful deliberations, and intelligent interaction with the Chandigarh audience, while many authors announced that they would release their next books at Literati 2015. Literati 2014 News Release 2 Ancient Indian Art teaches human compassion and love: Benoy K Behl Rediscovering Buddha Chandigarh, Sunday, Nov 9th, 2014 (Kulbir Singh Kalsi):- The third day of Literati 2014 started on a very sublime note as the world famous art historian, photographer and documentary maker on Indian ancient art, Benoy K. Behl took the audience on a tranquil visual treat as he unfolded the intricacies of ancient Indian art dating back to 2nd and 5th centuries BC Benoy K. Behl who is credited with 130 deeply researched documentary films, over 249 shows of his photographs in reputed galleries and museums in 30 countries of the world, and the most-sought after speaker at international fora, Benoy is the first ever Indian to have been featured in National Geographic magazine. Sharing the images that he photographed over months in the Buddhist caves in Ajanta and Elora, and painstakingly documented them, he described the high quality of art where fine detailing was exquisitely carried out by the artists at that time, which proves that they were highly evolved. The qualities of emotion, love, compassion, detachment are beautifully depicted in this art bringing to the fore the basic intrinsic human qualities of humaility and goodness, Benoy Behl said. Art, he said, is the reflection of human beings and the highly evolved quality and expressions captured in the paintings speaks volume of the work that the dwellers of the caves created. On being asked as to the identification of the artists of such paintings or why didnt the artists put their signature underneath their work, Benoy Behl responded that the painters as individuals were not important, since, in order to paint, the higher values and emotional content with the goodness and purity, they had to forget their own ego and paint with detachment. Literati 2014 News Release 3 DPS and Carmel bag top slots at Literati 2014 Essay Competition Chandigarh, Sunday, Nov 9th, 2014 (Kulbir Singh Kalsi):- Chandigarh Literary Society (CLS) had organized an Essay Writing Competition last month as a precursor to the lit fest, Literati 2014, inviting entries from the school children in the tricity area. There had been a good response and we received almost 40 entries from the students studying in the middle and the senior classes on the diverse topics given out to them, informed CLS Chairperson Sumita Gupta. The students of DPS Chandigarh bagged almost every slot in the compettion, however the top winners from the middle classes segment of Class 5 to 8, Aanya Bedi of Carmel Convent School bagged the first position, while Mani Shankar, and Pranay Garg of DPS Chandigarh won second and third position respectively. In the senior section for class 9 to Plus-2 category, DPS Chandigarh students, Apala Mandal bagged the first position, while Shivam Sood and Nehel Gupta, received second and third prizes respectively. The topics for essay writing for Class 5-8 students were whether students should be required to learn poetry, and second topic being, should a book reading club me made mandatory for all schools. In the senior section for class 9-12, the topics included, one, English language skills should not be tested in exams like UPSC, and two, it is sometimes right for the government to restrict freedom of speech.
