Change up your Green Bean Casserole this Thanksgiving by adding Fried Onion Straws I like to make my green bean casserole with an extra kick of flavor-fried onion straws. Instead of those canned onion straws try making your own at home. It will really add some extra love and make it look extra special when you present this dish to your friends and family this holiday season! Really, its not that hard and it looks and tastes great!! Make green bean casserole as you normally do. Ingredients: 1 large onion (yellow or sweet) 1 cup milk or buttermilk 1 tbsp season salt A pinch cayenne pepper To taste- fresh cracked black pepper 1 cup all purpose flour 4 cups of a vegetable oil (canola or shortening is fine too) Set up your stations. You will have a dish with milk, a dish with flour and seasonings, and pot of oil. Slice your onion thin. Place the slices into the milk, give a good toss. When oil is heated in a large pot to 300-350 F transfer 1/4 of the onions to the flour working in batches. Coat onions with flour then shake off excess flour and drop into hot oil. Give the onions a little push around in the pot with some long tongs. Allow to fry up and brown for 3-5 min. Remove from oil and place on paper towel lined rack to cool. Do the next 3 or so batches the same way- milk, flour, shake, oil, fry, remove, cool. Place onions on top of casserole just before serving, so they dont get soggy. Enjoy with your green bean casserole or on top of some mashed potatoes, I mean really these could go with anything. Enjoy! And Happy Thanksgiving!! *tip- use the leftover milk from the onions for a homemade Mac and cheese or mashed potatoes:)
