Changing a variable (introduce a temporary variable): Lets look at a simple little example: (x² + 2)² - 2(x² + 2) - 15 = 0. This could be hard to solve, so we mathematicians use a little neat trick here. We introduce a new variable e.g. u = x² + 2. The equation now looks like this: u² - 2u - 15 = 0, which is a quadratic equation that factors nicely to (u - 5)(u + 3). Now you guys can do the rest :)
