Changing the RMA has nothing to do with the housing shortages and everything to do with National party dogma that wishes to see NZ exploited for its mineral wealth so that a few may benefit from the profits. If the Government truly wanted to sort the housing shortages out in Christchurch and Auckland it would stop developments of commercial properties and divert the manpower to domestic housing. (It is ludicrous to talk about conference centres while families are sleeping in tents, cars or on relatives couches). It would repeat the state housing plans of the mid-1930s, which largely built houses for sale, not to rent. It would compulsorily purchase several tracts for land to develop new suburbs, with public transport infrastructure part of the deal. It would also create an annual levy (say $10,000 per section) on any sections which are being used as land banks by developers / investors. - Nick W
