Changing the surname of a women after marriage: A common mistake almost all of us have committed is changing the womens surname to ours after the marriage. But it is not permissible in Islam. Any human being either men or women should be known by their Fathers name until death not their spouses. The reason for this being simple, The women is not a blood relation to her husband and it is stated in Hadith that It was narrated from Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “There is no man who knowingly calls himself after someone other than his father but he has committed kufr. Whoever claims to belong to people to whom he has no ties of blood, let him take his place in Hell.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3317; Muslim, 61) The womens husband may die, or she may divorce and marry other guy, shall she keep on changing the surname? No, she cant. She has to carry her Fathers name until her death. Because a womans husband can change but not her father. She has nothing to do with the lineage of her husband and she must continue her Fathers lineage. This is pity that were brought up in a society where such culture is being followed and unknowingly we also followed the same. So we should stick to a simple policy of follow the Sunnah, not the society. Let us try to correct our mistakes and Lets see that our children are properly educated about such Sunnah so that they should not commit the same mistake.
