Channel 12 News -- WISN-TV -- just reported on the injury sustained by Dans student from Africa, the man I mentioned had been missing since last Sunday, November 30th, 2014. As I reported earlier, he had been located, and was in a hospital for treatment of severe injuries. I was not free to share more than that before now. This man, Simon, is a student in one of Dans classes at Cardinal Stritch University, a class with a focus on social justice. Students in Dans classes often participate in some form of social justice ministry during their course work. Simon had participated in one of the Meal Programs at St. Bens Community Meal, and was so moved by the experience that he began serving at this meal program every Sunday night, at the same time that Dan serves there as part of the Door Ministry service. Simon had been serving there a week ago, and offered to drive one of the guests of the meal to his home. Unfortunately, this proved to be unwise. Simon was attacked, and shot several times. According to tonights news broadcast, Simon has undergone several surgeries, and remains in critical, yet stable, condition in the hospital. Please continue to keep Simon, his family here in Milwaukee and in Africa, and all of his medical and surgical team in prayer. Please also keep all who have been, are, and will be involved with the St. Benedict the Moor Parish and Community Meal Program in prayer. THIS Meal program -- the first in Milwaukee of this stature, provides a vital service to individuals and families, and has been doing so for more than 30 years. The meal program depends upon the willingness of volunteers to prepare and serve a meal six nights week of the year. A shooting of a volunteer, even though it did not happen at the Meal Program itself, can be scary. Prayers needed for courage for all of us. Peace, Jackie
