Chaos Magic Gnosis Absolutely fundamental to Chaos Magic is the Gnostic State, which is referred to as Gnosis. This is an altered state of consciousness that in Chaos Magic theory is necessary for working most forms of magic. This is a departure from older concepts, with which most of us are familiar, that describe energies, spirits or symbolic acts as the source of magical powers. In Chaos Magic, one must experience Gnosis. This can be any altered state of consciousness in which one eclipses the monkey-mind, and achieves an expanded sense of self and the universe. The Gnostic State is achieved when the Chaote’s mind is focused on a single point, thought or goal and all other thoughts are thrust out. Chaos Magic is noted for encouraging the attainment of the state of Gnosis through extreme, even exhibitionary methods: dance, drumming, chanting, hyperventilation, sensory overload, and so on. Due to the influence of both Taoism and Tibetan Tantra on its originators, however, there is also a strong proclivity toward inhibitionary paths to Gnosis: breathing techniques, sitting meditation, trance, pranayama, and so forth. Practitioners of Chaos Magic each develop individual ways of reaching the Gnostic State. Yet all such methods hinge upon the belief that a simple thought or direction experienced during the Gnostic State and then forgotten quickly afterwards bypasses the "psychic censor" – those faculties averse to the magical manipulation of reality. The thought is sent to the subconscious, rather than the conscious mind, where it can be enacted through means unknown to the conscious mind.
