Chapter 1: Asia’s Transformation for an Asian Century: Choices and Challenges Pongsak Hoontrakul Abstract The Asian Century is dawning. The world’s economic center is shifting from West to East, reshaping geopolitics. While not all Asian countries are successfully moving from industrialization to digitalization, in Southeast Asia, China, India, and elsewhere, new technologies, including the widespread use of social media, are changing economic and political regimes. Five megatrends pose challenges: (1) life after “quantitative easing” (QE); (2) new technologies; (3) individual empowerment and growing demands; (4) Asia’s internationalization; and (5) changing demographic patterns. Five game changers can make or break the promises of the Asian Century: (1) rising pressures on ruling systems; (2) the shale gas revolution; (3) the transformation of global trade/financial flows; (4) infrastructure connectivity; and (5) human capital and “the middle-income trap.”
