Chapter 1 draft . . Why would we even want to find faith or live some kind of spiritual life? Recent surveys in Europe have found that whilst there is a decline in traditional faith and practice there is, since the year 2000, an increased belief that there is a ‘life force’ or ‘spiritual force’. The percentage of those who believe in absolutely nothing , ie, there is no God or things spiritual, is quite low Now you may be wondering why you even picked up this book! Before you put it down again can I ask you to have a little think. When you are quiet for a few moments is there something within yourself that wonders, that has questions, that could even be described as a desire? And if you had to put a name to that feeling, what would you call it? And is this feeling valid? In the same way we could say, is the desire for romantic love valid? And we could answer that one. I’m sure scientists, psychologists, poets, artists and philosophers would have a rich variety of things to say and even answers as to why the desire for romantic love is valid. Yet, it seems that around three quarters of us would acknowledge something else. Almost as if we were born with it. A feeling of, ‘otherness’, a feeling of, there is more out there. That there is somehow a greater point to life that just rushing around mad busy all the time. Not only a greater point, but, that I, me, personally should have a greater destiny or purpose! Apparently only humans, amongst the mammals, are aware that they are mortal, yes, we are all aware that we will one day die. Yet this scientific fact seems wrong and offensive to us, as if we know somewhere deep inside that we were meant to live for ever!
