Chapter 3 of my autobiography focuses not on music but movie and my all time favourite film Rear Window (1954). In fact its the lack of music in this film that adds to its character. The entire film is set in the apartment of L.B. Jeff Jeffries, a photographer temporarily confined to a wheelchair with a cast on his broken leg. Believing his neighbour has disposed of his wife he enlists the help of his girlfriend Liza and visiting nurse Stella to discover the grisly truth about Mrs. Thorwalds disappearance. The film is incredibly claustrophobic, the whole film taking place in one room to accentuate the isolation felt by Jeff. He invents names for his neighbours (Miss Torso, the dancer and Miss Lonelyhearts the singleton looking for love) who are his only source of entertainment. The only music comes from the bar across the street and the piano being played by the songwriter in an adjacent apartment. Overall the film is a masterclass in suspense, another example of Hitchcocks genius. The clip Ive chosen is near the end of the film when Liza sneaks into the Thorwalds apartment to find evidence of the poor wifes demise. And the look on Mr. Thorwalds face when he realises who has been watching him is truly terrifying...
