Chapter 36 “Learning about the past” In the last chapter Kasuyo had revealed to all his friends that he had no memory of his childhood from when he was 10 years old. Kasimei was shocked because she had no idea that he had amnesia. Even Takaru was surprised also. But he knew that from the start that Kasuyo didn’t seem like an ordinary kid. He knew that something was different about him. Like he seemed to not fit in very well and that he wasn’t very sociable. Kasuyo knew that his memory loss was a mystery to him because he didn’t know what caused him to lose his memory. They were still on the roof of the school because classes had been canceled for the rest of the day so they decided to hang out on the roof so Kasuyo could try to tell them the story on how he lost his memory. Mikuyo asked him “So Kasuyo. You wanna explain to us on how you lost your memory?” Kasuyo started to feel nervous and then e said “I don’t know if I can.” Kasimei rolled up to him and she said “Can you at least try? For me…” There was a silent pause and then he took a deep breath and then he said “Okay I’ll try to explain it the best way that I can.” There was a flashback to Kasuyo’s past. “It began about 5 to 6 years ago I think. I was in a hospital in some kind of town called New Tokyo. There were some people that were near me that seemed to be some of the staff at the hospital. One of the doctors who was a man that was doing x-rays and brain scans on me. Then while they were on break one of the male doctor went up to me and asked me “So how are you feeling today?” I looked at him and said “I’m fine I guess.” He said “Good, well your grandmother is on her to come and pick you up.” I was confused and then I asked “My grandmother?” He said “Yes, she is the only family that you have left.” I was still confused and then I asked him “But what about my parents?” He then looked away from me for a moment and then he looked back at me and told me the news that shocked me. He said “I’m sorry. But, your parents died in the accident that you were involved in. The car was flying over a deep hill or cliff and then it started to malfunction and then it fell into the water. Then the engine caught on fire and then it exploded. But, it’s a good thing that the police managed to get you out of the car in time before you burned to death too. But, you were unconscious that whole time. You were in a coma for 2 years after the accident.” “Then a woman came and explained the rest of the situation to me.” She said to me “Kasuyo we hate to tell you this but you have amnesia. The shock from the accident had caused you to lose your memory.” Kasuyo said “I was in shock when I found out that I had lost my memory but, then the woman named Susan and the man was named Richard told me that with the training program that they had planned out for me they said that I would regain my memory in no time.” Kasuyo was still explaining his past to everyone. Back to the flashback “When they rolled me to the waiting room in a wheelchair I saw that there was a woman that was in a chair and she looked at me. She went up to me and she hugged me. She then said “Kasuyo, sweet little Kasuyo.” My eyes widened and I said Ka-su-yo.” She was still hugging me and she was crying as well. The reason she was crying was because she was happy that I was still alive after the accident. Takaru interrupted him for a moment and he said “So let me get this straight you were involved in a really bad car accident that had killed your parents and then your grandmother took over and raised you.” He said “Yes, but there’s a lot more than that.” Then he went back to the flashback. “Over the next year I went back and forth from the hospital back to the house where my parents raised me. The house was very big and all the rooms were really amazing. As far as I remember.” “Over the years I was there they put me on a lot of different machines and they tried to explain how the accident happened to me but, every time I saw the pictures I couldn’t help but turn away. My grandmother kept looking at me like she was really worried about me. She also tried to tell me stories about my parents too but every time she told me I didn’t give her any reactions.” Then one day “Kasuyo, would you like some more soup?” I looked at her and said “No thank you.” She looked at me with concern and then she “You have to eat more to regain your strength dear. Or maybe you would like to hear a story about your parents.” “I don’t know.” I said. She asked me “What’s the matter dear?” I looked at her with tears streaming down my face and I said “I don’t know, I don’t remember anything, and…. And I don’t know you either. I don’t know who you are. You say that you’re Keiko Rioma and you say that you’re my grandma but I don’t know who you are. I don’t know at all. She went up to me and she put her hand on my shoulder and she said “I’m sure you’ll get your memory back.” I got angry and I said “No I won’t. I won’t remember anything.” Then a bowl dropped and broke on the floor. “I went to the couch to lay down to see if that would calm me down. My grandmother put a chair next to me and said something to me that I would remember to help get my memory back. After she said the words to me she then sat me up and told me more stories about my parents.” “Then over time I kept receiving my treatments and then after three years I was finally out of the hospital and I was strong again.” “On my last day Susan and Richard gave me hugs and wished me luck and they told me to be as strong as I could. I told them that I would be strong no matter what. Susan then went up to me and she gave me a hug.” “After all that happened that’s when I started elementary school and met Takaru and how we became really good friends.” Takaru then said “Yea and you and I were going to go to junior high together too.” He said “Yeah but then one day I found by grandmother had collapsed on the floor so I tried to get a doctor but then she stopped me and then she said “Be strong.” “And I didn’t understand what she meant but when I tried to ask her it was too late. She had died.” He went back to the present day and he said “So there you have it.” Everyone was surprised but then they all gave him a hug and they said that they would help him get his memory back as much as they could. Kasuyo was happy that he had so many great friends that loved him and that wanted to help him out as best as they could. Takaru looked at his watch and he said that it was getting late and that they should head home for the day. While they were walking out the door Takaru said “Hey Kasuyo?” He said “What is it?” He said “You can come and stay at my place if you don’t want to live at you’re house anymore. My mom wouldn’t mind.” He nodded his head and he said “Alright.” He grabbed his things out of his house and then he locked the door, turned in his house keys and then he to Takaru’s house until he was able to find a place of his own. He got to Takaru’s place and he saw that his house was very big and he saw that the guest room in his house was really huge. He put his stuff down and then Takaru said “Dinner should be ready soon so just relax in the meantime and then I’ll come up to get you when it’s done.” He said “Alright, sounds good.” He closed the door and then headed downstairs. Kasuyo had the room all to himself to he just laid back and then he started thinking about when he was in the hospital with Susan and Richard. He thought that they were really nice people and he also liked how they treated him at the hospital too. Then he heard a knock on the door saying “Hey Kasuyo, are you awake? Well dinner is ready whenever you are, so you can come down and eat.” He said “Okay I’ll be right down.” Takaru said “Alright.” He got up, wiped the dust from his pants and then he headed downstairs to eat because he was really hungry after a really long day and also explaining about his past to his friends. While he was eating with Takaru’s family Takaru’s mother looked at him and she said “Kasuyo.” He turned to her and he said “Yes, ma’am.” She then said “You’re welcome here anytime Hun. And you can stay with us as long as you like.” He said “Oh, thank you.” Takaru’s father said “It’s no problem at all son. Just make yourself comfortable.” He said “Ok.” After he ate dinner he went straight to bed because he had a long day. He got in the covers, turned out the lights and then he went right to sleep.
