Chapter one: If the holidays ever taught me anything, its that youve got to live your own truth. My aunt and I were driving down this flooded main highway road, and came to a particularly dangerous intersection, that was flooded to a rather concerning degree after a rigorous storm all day. Considering this place hadnt seen rain in five years. This elderly (mid 70s year old) woman in an electric wheel chair was stopped in the intersection in more than a foot of water with her wheels and feet completely submerged, and clearly was immobile at such a point. I jumped out of our truck into the water that was above the tops of my cowboy boots (just below the knee) and we waded through to the end. She had sandals on, and her ankles were bare so her poor little feet and legs were soaked with what was next to freezing water. Fortunately, though, her chair was still functioning. Phew. I walked with her a few blocks to make perfectly certain her chair wouldnt short out prior to our parting way, so that she would undoubtably arrive home safely. It was after all, nearly 11 pm and she was soaking wet and cold. I listened to her sweet mindless chatter about how all her grandkids Eva do is watch the Damn cartoonsand tell me how sugary sweet I sho is. When we came upon the obnoxiously illuminated 99 cent sign, she looks up at me with Harry gray eyes and says: Oh boy, am I glad theyre still open, was gettin worried there. you take care now. And pushes her chair in full gear toward the entrance doors. My jaw must haVe hit the floor. I remain outside waiting for my aunt to arrive and I pull off my boots and pour all the water out of my new leather cowboy boots. Shit. I just squinch squinch squinch back up to the truck and as I hop in, I see her ZOOM past the front entrance doors on a true mission like a bat out of hell. Savings were on the brain. My aunt Cynthia Starn and I look at eachother wide eyed. We say nothing. Tis the season not to pass up on savings like those, I suppose. And a friendly reminder to LIVE YOUR TRUTH.
