Charity can be categorised into many levels. Mere giving away free handouts dwells at the bottom of the tier. I frankly speaking, have had enough of supplying stuff to the Chow Kit kids- just give and feel good. I have been approached by many kind-hearted people who want to chip in with this turun Chow Kit project, some offering funds, food and other essential stuff. But my first response (after thanking them for their good gestures) would be, hold the good thought or intention please, let me plan the activities first. Why? This is because we do not want the street folks to latch on us for free stuff and make no progress in life. Furthermore, we want them (street folks) to feel the pinch too, that life aint at all easy peasy. We limit the distribution of milk, diapers and other stuff to 10 - 12 packs only. Extras I keep at home for next turun Chow Kit or I donate to orphanages. We have decided that the street kids MUST attend to our learning activities for at least 45 minutes before these handouts are given. And as for the activities, I have adapted the good stuff in KSSR, Emillio Reggio, Montessori whateva I know of to our street curriculum. This is our fishing rod. I would expect to see progress in the children, and of course a gradual change of mindset in the parents. Our aim is to empower the kids to explore and learn, to think beyond their comfort zone, i.e soup kitchen, free susu and others. We are truly in debted to those who have contributed, still contributing and will be contributing. The number of volunteers have risen, the ripple effect is real. Moving forward, we need to stock on teaching aids like big pictorial books, art & craft materials, colourful flashcards and others. And at this moment, Alhamdulillah a dear friend, Rasheedah CoachSha and her kids are working very hard to collect fundings for the purchase of a portable generator with lights (those who can advise us a good quality one at an affordable price please PM me). The street lights aint bright enough for the kids evening activities. So let there be light! Weve a doctor who would be coming on board to conduct free medical check ups, well be distributing ubat cacing to the kids too, which they have to consume in our presence. Many more good stuff for the children, starting Saturday, 20 Sept and beyond. InsyaAllah. Thus, lets work together to break this vicious cycle of ignorance, poverty and illiteracy. No child should be left to suffer. #kongsirezeki
