The Blue Penguin is the world’s smallest penguin at just 35-43cm tall, and weighing a little over 1 kg. It is found in many places around New Zealand and Australia and is a protected native species. The West Coast Blue Penguin Trust is a charitable trust formed in 2006 by local residents concerned at the decline in blue penguin populations. The Trust promotes the awareness and enjoyment of blue penguins and other coastal birds through participation in community events, media liaison and school education programmes from Karamea to Haast.
