Charles Blow comments on the ongoing--but incorrect--belief that American communities are full of crime. I noticed this a few days ago, visiting an unfamiliar FB page, where southerners were commenting nastily on how theyd fear for their lives on northern city streets. Why on earth would they? I wondered. I have lived in northern cities all my life and had one bad experience....although yes, I have seen several really stupid events that could have escalated into crime, but didnt. But this idea about city crime supposes that the suburbs and the countryside are crime-free, which they are not. Houses and cars are broken into everywhere. Women and children are raped everywhere, including suburban churches and ministers offices. Husbands and boyfriends kill their wives and girlfriends everywhere. And, overwhelmingly, person-on-person crimes against white people are committed by other white people. How come these scared southerners dont understand this, if they are so afraid of walking down the street and just being alive? I would rather know who my real enemies are than be stupid about it, because as long as I am stupid about it, Im not protecting myself against my real enemies. (Actually, I personally dont think I have enemies at all.)
