Charles Darwin started in 1973 in huts at the corner of Old Tye Avenue. There were 164 starting boys and girls, including Chris Clegg, Catherine Kelly and Keith Cronk. Mr Taverner was the first Head Teacher. I was Deputy Head, John Fitton head of science, Mike Gear and Rose Gedney PE, Terry Browne Maths, Charles Vignoles English, Dorothy Goode History, Mrs. Jill Davies was in charge of SEN, a music teacher, an art teacher. We moved into the new school the next September. Simultaneously we acquired about 50 extra students to form a small 3rd form plus of course, new 1st years and a lot of new staff. The new school also, for one term, accommodated about 180 boys and girls due to go to the new Darrick Wood School. I wish Id kept a diary of it all!
