Charles Hedelius recited this entire Thanksgiving poem at our Utah Valley Toastmasters Club, yesterday. It is darling. I wish I would have thought to record it. Please read and share it to your loved ones at your Thanksgiving Meal. A Thanksgiving Poem Author unknown When I was a young turkey, just new to the coop, My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop. And he sat me down and he spoke real low, And he said, there’s something that you ought to know. His look and his tone I’ll always remember As he told me the horrors of Black November. Come August, he said, now listen to me, You’ll get six meals a day instead of just three, You’ll grow all thick where now you’re thin, And you’ll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin. And then one day when you’re warm in your bed, The farmers’ wife will come and she’ll hack off your head. She’ll pull out your feathers ‘till you’re all bald and pink, And scoop out your insides and leave you lying in the sink. Then comes the worst part, he said not bluffing, She’ll spread your cheeks and fill you full of stuffing. Well the rest of his words were too grim to repeat, I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat. I decided right then to avoid being cooked I’d have to lay low and remain over looked. So I started a new diet of nuts and granola, High roughage salad, juice and diet cola. While the others at pastries and chocolates and crepes, I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes. I maintained my weight, just two pounds and a half And tried not to notice when the other birds laughed. But t’was me that was laughing under my breath As they chomped and they chewed their way closer to death. And sure enough when Black November rolled around, I was the only turkey left in the entire compound. So now I’m a pet on the farmers’ wife’s lap I haven’t a care, so I eat and I nap. She held me today while sewing and humming And smiled at me and said, “Christmas is Coming!” May you all be blessed and continue the attitude of gratitude throughout the year. Norene
