Charleston Police Officer Honored With Knights of Columbus Police Officer of the Year Award Charleston Police Officer Kevin Schlieben has been named Police Officer of the Year by the Knights of Columbus Assembly 1071. Officer Schlieben will be presented with the award on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at a breakfast at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 1695 Wallenberg Boulevard. Officer Schlieben was recognized for his vital role in an armed robbery detail which led to the arrest of two suspects for several armed robberies that occurred between January 2014 through May 2014 on James Island and West Ashley. On April 6, 2014, Officer Schlieben along with his trainee, Matthew Tulia, saw a Ford Escape with dark tinted windows south bound on Ashley River Road. He initiated a traffic stop because of the tinted windows. The vehicle stopped and two male passengers wearing all black clothing jumped out of the vehicle, ran through oncoming traffic and into a nearby wooded area. The driver remained in the vehicle. Officer Schlieben immediately broadcast a description of the suspects and their direction of flight to other patrol units. A perimeter was established. Meanwhile, Officer Schlieben interviewed the driver, Feraud Lemon, 25, who said he didn’t know the male passengers who jumped out of the vehicle. Lemon said he borrowed the vehicle from a man who was at a hotel on Savannah Highway. Lemon gave Officer Schlieben permission to search the vehicle finding information identifying the owner of the vehicle. He contacted the owner who said she didn’t know Lemon and he didn’t have permission to drive the vehicle. She had given the vehicle to a family member. After obtaining his contact information and address, Lemon was issued a written warning and released. A short time later a man, who matched the description of one of the men who fled from the vehicle, was seen walking on Ashley River Road. He denied running from the vehicle and was released. As result of the ongoing investigation, detectives charged Lemon and Antonio Simmons, 31, with four counts of armed robbery. Officer Schlieben’s efforts, dedication and attention to detail played a vital role in the arrest of the suspects.
