Charlie Hebdo: Australian Muslim groups largely silent on Paris murders AMID a chorus of condemnation by prominent international imams of the Charlie Hebdo murders, there was silence yesterday from most of the Australian Muslim leadership over events in Paris. The Grand Mufti of Australia issued no comment in the wake of the murders of 12 French people, including journalists and police, and only one major Islamic organ­isation issued a statement in ­response to the atrocity. Some in Australia’s Muslim community were questioning ­yesterday the wisdom in failing to publicly respond to the Paris attack, even while acknowledging the great frustration among those who feel they must defend their ­religion every time an extremist takes violent action.
