Charlie Hebdo was in the business of giving offense, and it tried - TopicsExpress

Charlie Hebdo was in the business of giving offense, and it tried hard to offend everyone — right and left, Protestant and Catholic, Muslim and Jew, male and female, Western and non-Western, writes Arthur Goldhammer of what the French call gouaille, concluding, In mourning the tragedy, let us not forget that Charlie Hebdo was shocking, obscene and offensive because the world is — as today’s shocking, obscene and offensive tragedy makes clear. In my view, it was not only clearly imprudent & offensive but also deeply irresponsible of Charlie Hebdo to publish the Danish Mohammed cartoons as well as other cartoons that mocked Muslims & Islam, given the rising tide of Islamophobia in France; but of course, that cant in any way justify the murder of the editor & the cartoonists. One can engage in a critique of Charlie Hebdo while at the same time condemning this terrorist attack without qualification or ambivalence... america.aljazeera/opinions/2015/1/charlie-hebdo-gouaillesatireislamjournalism.html
