Charlie Mingus died many years ago today; his heart gave out but thats not the whole story… He had manic-depressive illness & had multiple stints on psychiatric units in Bellevue Hospital, was on Thorazine & Lithium until 6 months before his death. Without a doubt, his hard drinking ways & his manic creativity exerted a toll. His arrangements were tributes to Big Band Jazz ( he composed a piece called Open Letter To Duke ) but miles ahead : who can forget Pork-Pie Hat or Moanin ? My favorite albums are Ah-Hum & Yeah but everything that he did will hold you in a spell, if you let it. With existence, comes oblivion; who are we to demand otherwise ? All we can do is ask : Who are we ? Where are we going ? What should we do today ?
