Charlie Myers Speech to the VFW tomorrow evening: The Call of Duty If you were to ask someone young on the street today what is “The Call of Duty” you may be shocked at their answer. Many of our younger generation believe that “The Call of Duty” is a video war game consisting of different battle scenarios and levels of play. However if you were to ask a Veteran what “the call of duty” means he or she would look you directly in the eye and say “that’s when my country needed me and I answered the Call”. Many young people cannot appreciate what it means to serve their country, most will never know what it is like to leave their loved ones and be gone for extended periods of time. They will never experience that sacrifices, the honor and the duty you have given to your nation. We can never lose sight of a few very basic principles; we served our country because we honored her and knew what freedom meant, we gave of our youth to our country when she needed us more than our families did, we served because we knew it was our duty, it was expected and we were willing. As our country continues to age and those that have served her faithfully pass on we hope we have left her in hands of those that will understand what it takes to keep her free and safe. Many of us have sons and daughters that have followed in our footsteps; not because we demanded or required it but because as they were growing up we instilled in them the sense of honor, duty, country. We thought them principles to become good citizens of a great nation. I fear however there are not enough sons and daughters with the drive, honor and dedication to serve their country and keep her free from tyrants. One thing is for sure a military conflict makes soldiers of them very quickly but an old experience military veteran can teach them skills that will keep them alive and that valuable asset is slowly but surely leaving us every day. Each of you have given some part of your life either through combat service, in support of that role or as family members keeping things together in our absence. Each of you know the tremendous sense of pride and love you have for your country. Men and women like us are becoming an endangered species. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking we just came through a time when our nation actually considered not taking care of her veterans and active duty service members. Many tried to make us political pawns. Some used us as a way to threaten others into making decisions that furthered their own agendas. We are not pawns but patriots that served or are serving proudly and honorably, with families that depend on us and many who barely survive pay check to pay check. Families who’s loved ones gave the ultimate sacrifice when they answered the call of duty. We can no longer be bargaining chips or pawns as we deserve better. We deserve the respect and loyalty for the service we gave. We did our job honorably in many conflicts and now it’s time our government does its job and introduce and pass legislation that will never again allow our military veterans and active duty to be used as political pawns for any issue EVER!! Thank you for your service and may god bless each and every one of you on this Veterans Day, 2013. Thank you Charlie Myers
