Chattergam killings: Restrictions, shutdown in Srinagar Clashes in Habba Kadal, Nowgam Srinagar, November 04: Authorities Tuesday imposed curfew like restrictions in Old City and Nowgam of Srinagar to contain protests against the killing of two youths in army firing while a spontaneous shutdown was observed across the city amidst clashes against the incident. Eye witnesses Tuesday said since early morning, hundreds of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personal were deployed across the Old City areas falling under five police station including Rainawari, M R Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar and Safa Kadal. The forces personal, armed with assault rifles and batons, had placed barbed wires and mobile bunkers on various junctions and bridges of Old City to restrict civilian movement, witnesses said. The restrictions, however, were eased in most parts of the Old City in the afternoon. Reports said the mourners who were going to Zadibal to attend Ashoora procession were allowed by forces after questioning. The authorities had also imposed strict curfew-like restrictions in Nowgam area of the city where hundreds of police and CRPF personal were deployed to restrict civilian movement. Eye witness said the forces had sealed all the entry and exit points of the Nowgam area and were not allowing residents and other people to come and go inside the area. Despite huge deployment of forces, the youths clashed with forces throughout the day in the area, police said. “To disperse the youths, police and paramilitary resorted to heavy teargas shelling,” locals said. Meanwhile, a spontaneous shutdown was observed across the city against the Chattergam killings. Most of the shops and commercial establishments were shut in the city while private and public transport was off the roads. The schools, colleges, government offices and banks were already closed on the account of Muharram holiday. The clashes between youths and forces also erupted in Habba Kadal area of the city where police resorted to teargas and pepper shelling to disperse the stone-throwing youth. Sources said clashes broke out in Nowhatta area of the downtown soon after police and paramilitary forces lifted restrictions.
