Although the ghatam looks like an ordinary Indian domestic clay pot, it is made specifically to be played as a pitched percussion instrument. The Manamadurai ghatam is thicker and heavier with tiny shards of brass, copper and other secret ingredients mixed into the clay. Ghatams are hand made and each ghatam artisan has their own unique recipe. Manamadurai ghatams require more force to play but produce a rich, sharp metallic ringing sound that is favored by most professionals. Manamaduri ghatams are made by artisans in the town of Manamadurai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. For hundreds of years now, ghatams made out of Manamadurai soil have produced a unique sound due to some naturally occurring ingredients in the soil. Although ghatam makers outside of Manamadurai claim to make Manamadurai ghatams, only ghatams made with the local clay have the unique Manamadurai sound. A concert grade ghatam has to be even thickness all around so that it produces an even tone regardless of where it is struck. It also has to be close to perfectly pitched. The artisan typically makes a batch of about 100 ghatams at a time. It takes about a month to prepare the clay, form the shape, and fire the batch. As is typical of artisanal products, many ghatams in the batch will not have an even tone andor may not be close to perfectly pitched. For example, a concert A (440 Hz) ghatam may have a perfectly even tone but will have a pitch of 438 Hz or 442 Hz. 50% of the batch will be considered unsuitable by the artisan and those ghatams are destroyed. Ghatams also, almost always have cosmetic imperfections such as minor chips and uneven color, making each one, truly unique.
