Cheaper air fuel does not mean cheaper air fare WINDSOR LOCKS, CT (WWLP) - U.S. airlines are saving millions on gas, but you aren’t saving when it comes to buying your ticket. The price of jet fuel is going down and airlines are saving tens of millions of dollars every week. Even though they’re saving cash on their biggest expense, passengers aren’t. Instead, ticket prices are going up, especially during the holidays. “It doesn’t surprise me at all,” says Ellen Massocci of Southington, CT. “If they have people who are demanding seats, they can ask whatever they want for a ticket.” Since September 2013, us airlines have saved more than $1.5 billion on jet fuel. In that same time, ticket prices went up by nearly 4%. Ticket prices aren’t going down because flights are full, and airlines are reinvesting in their planes and computers. But if the airlines aren’t giving passengers a break, can anyone get a good deal on a last minute ticket around the holidays? “A good deal? No, they can get there and I don’t know for how much, you know,” says Marjorie Jackson, a travel agent at World Wide Travel in West Springfield. “They’ll have to pay what they have to pay.” If you can’t escape expensive plane tickets, World Wide Travel in West Springfield offers these tips to save money on your trip: Book anything you can as early as possible Look for new hotels that are opening… they might have cheaper deals And see a travel agent to help plan around your budget Experts say airfare will always be expensive around the holidays no matter how cheap air fuel is.
