The traditional way people approach writing is sort of like painting, like they’re creating a new thing out of nothing. Obviously it’s a physical process. You have the canvas and paint, sure. [...] But with sculpture, you have objects and you put them together and once you put them together it becomes a new thing. So you’re not starting from nothing, you’re starting from these very concrete materials. And that’s kind of how I’ve been trying to approach writing.
