Check out Jimmy Vincent, the drummer whos best known for his high energy work with the great Louis Prima. Vincents solo starts at 0:35, and gets into some serious showmanship around the 2:00 mark - the entire video is a priceless opportunity to witness what Louis Primas legendary Las Vegas lounge act was all about. A self-taught drummer, Vincent started with Prima as a teen in the 1930s. You can really see the influence of Gene Krupa and Jo Jones in his playing style. He left Prima in the early 50s to start his own band The Goofers, where he developed the bit with the masks. He brought that to the act when he rejoined Prima around 1960. Although this routine may seem a bit campy, it was entirely fitting for the style and the era, and Vincents chops and ability to swing HARD are worthy of our attention and respect.
