Check out our new website (partnersinthehorn.org) and our new Winter 2014-2015 Newsletter (partnersinthehorn.org/downloads/PHA%20Newsletter%2023%20-%20Winter%202014-15.pdf) Happy Holidays from the Staff, Board of Directors and Volunteers at Partners! 2014 was a year in which Partners in the Horn of Africa reached out to more than 20 disadvantaged groups and communities in Ethiopia. We focused on three key issues: access to clean water; education; and adequate income. Although the global economy is recovering, the distribution of wealth remains unequal. We ring in 2015 with Gandhi’s words in mind: “The Earth provides enough to satisfy every mans need but not for every mans greed”. While we rightly ask that national governments and international organizations address the issue of global poverty, we also want to be part of the solution and do so by sharing resources with those who do not have a “fair share”. Above all, we believe that the most important role we can undertake is to empower local communities to be “partners” and directly involved in their own development, rather than mere beneficiaries. We work “with” the Ethiopian people rather than “for” them, with the aim of transitioning the less fortunate from dependency to self-sufficiency. Our Winter 2014-2015 Newsletter celebrates the stories resulting from our work in Ethiopia, and includes the account of a donor group from Salmon Arm, BC who travelled there earlier this year to observe our projects. It also features actions by Canadians to raise awareness and donations for our Ethiopian projects such as the 10th edition of the Great Big Run for Africa, and the opening of more than 50 school libraries, a project realized thanks to the generosity of Club Penguin / Disney. This is the time of year when we raise most of our finances. If you have already made your annual donation we thank you. If you have not yet done so, we urge you to do so at your earliest convenience. We need your generosity for the year ahead, our 15th year of operation. The work we are doing is important and you can help us make a difference. You are one of our “partners” in the Horn of Africa. 100% of any donation to Partners in the Horn of Africa goes directly toward project costs in Ethiopia. All administrative and fundraising costs are covered by Friends of the Horn of Africa, a separately funded sister charity. We work with an Ethiopian partner on each project, usually a community or local organization. Our partner proposes the project and is required to contribute at least 15% of the total cost in cash, labour, or materials. These are the two principles upon which Partners in the Horn of Africa is based. Operating since 2001, we are a non-denominational Canadian charity operating exclusively in Ethiopia, the largest country in the “Horn of Africa”. We work with both rural and urban communities, focusing our efforts and investments in areas of unmet need. Our projects respond to community requests, addressing a range of needs such as education, basic infrastructure, water and sanitation, food security, and sustainable livelihoods.
