Check out the crowded first floor of the Wolcott St. School in the mid 50s. It was so cool when you grew up and made it to the 3rd floor as a 5th/6th grader as there were those translucent white ceiling windows in the central portion of the hallway that made that floor seem so much more advanced. Crowding was quite common in the grade school when I was a student there in the later 60s. Many a time my lunch box was knocked from my hand in a crowd and I watched in horror as the box bounced from step to step knowing full well my thermos and its GLASS lining were going to be toast. In the winter, the cloak rooms were stock piled with boots of the same design as many of the mothers shopped at the same stores for them. When you pulled too hard on the buckles used to tighten your boots, the buckle would literally rip off. Your next course of action was to check all of the other boots nearby for your size (scribed on the bottom of the boot) and try again! The last kid out of the cloak room at days end was usually not a happy camper as he had to go home and try to explain to his parents how he managed to ruin both his thermos and his boots on the same day!
