Check out the latest scam...sounds pretty sophisticated the way they give out fake badge #s, have background noise, official looking e-mails, fake caller ID info, and may even know the last four digits of your SSN!! The main thing to remember is that IRS almost never calls or e-mails you. Most collection attempts are sent via US mail because they prefer to leave a paper trail that will support their collection efforts in tax court (if it ever gets that far!). If you get one of these calls, dont give any of your personal information (license, SSN, checking or credit card acct, address, full names, etc.). Simply hang up and call the official IRS number, 1800-829-1040 to get the correct balance information and report the scam while youre at it.
