Check out this great review of Houston Howards Make Your Story Really Stinkin Big: I find this book truly inspirational. On page xxv, the author writes: “If George Lucas did it and J.K. Rowling did it, then so can we. And so can you. If you have the proper inspiration, a great idea, and you’re armed with the right tools, I say chase the giant whale and don’t settle for Nemo.” On page 97, he emphasizes: “At the end of the day, it’s characters, more than plot, that grab the audience member’s soul because characters have the ability to translate their own actions, desires, passions, fears, and dreams into the audience’s databank of experiences and emotions.” The author provides helpful summaries including the one on page 106 that features: “Creating your micro-stories will consist of identifying the subject matter of your story, determining the new and unique aspects of your storyworld that will be revealed in each story, fleshing out timeless characters, and working through a comprehensive beat sheet to form an outline.” Material in this book is helpful to me because one of my three franchises is called “Jack AngelSword,” and I have three teams working on 3 graphic novels and I’m completing the text-novel simultaneously. When I first began in the film industry, I was focused on one-off stories. Now, I’m all about franchises. This is a great book to get you started! Make Your Story Really Stinkin Big is a creative, yet straightforward manual on how to take one concept and turn it into a franchise that will last generations.
