Check out this octopus at the Great Barrier Reef, the changes in camouflage alone make them a wonder to spot and observe. One of the many amazing marine creatures we need to protect. Please get involved in working towards protecting our reef, we need to start turning things around if we want to save it. Back in 1975 Australians fought hard to get protections put in place for the Great Barrier Reef and GBRMPA was established. In 1994 a 25-Year Strategic Plan for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area was produced, which expires in 5 years. Now it the time to start to turn things around, not to increase the number of threats the reef is dealing with. The current protections are no longer effective. Research published in 2012 stated the GBR had lost half its coral cover since 1985. Industrial expansion both on land and at sea, are placing far greater pressure, on an already stressed ecosystem by extreme weather, ocean warming and acidification. But instead of investing in the reef’s protection GBRMPA is undergoing an internal restructure and a $2.8 million Federal Government cut to their budget, causing a loss of key staff, five directors and a dozen other staff have decided to take a redundancy package and leave, in what some are calling the biggest loss of expertise in the authoritys history. 17 staff are set to be cut from GBRMPA. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authoritys 2014 Outlook Report assessed ocean acidification as a very high risk to the reef. Please take the time to learn about the problems and what you can do to help. People power worked in 1975 and if can work again.
