Check out what ACME Fine Wines posted this evening; Valley Floor Vineyard rated #4 on their 2014 Top 10 List, behind Hundred Acre, Precious Cab: Acme Door Handle Header Pulse Tasting Friday, 5-7pm What a year! Welcome to ACME’s list of our top 10 wines of the year. For the second year in a row, we tallied the results, and compiled the list of the wines which were the TOP wines at ACME in 2014. Quantity of bottles sold + positive customer feedback (+ our own personal biases and agendas of what we think is most delicious, because hey, we taste this stuff all year) all came into play when adding up the results. Please click to acquire or simply reply to this email directly and let us know if you see anything you must have. Well be happy to arrange a special package to arrive on your doorstep next year! #10 – Passenger, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 - $75 Winemaker Benoit Touquette. As I recently told a customer, if aliens landed tomorrow and needed to know what great Napa Cab tastes like, I’d bring Kang and Kodos a glass of this wine. #9 – Brovia, Barolo DOCG 2010 - $60 Ciao tutti! Quintessential excellence. #2 – Mayacamas, Chardonnay, Mt. Veeder 2006 - $53 Library release from this iconic Napa Valley winery, a recent inclusion in our Kahuna Club. #1 – G.B. Crane, El Coco, Red Wine, St. Helena 2012 - $75 As champions of the finest wines, we measure California’s wealth in her heritage vineyard sites. Like the oldest vines in the To Kalon vineyard, like the 100+ year old Library Vineyard visible from our shop, like the famous Monte Rosso vineyard, and like the heirloom vineyards cared for by producers like Turley or Bedrock or Detert, you can’t reproduce those flavors with any amount of winery magic. Vineyards with this remarkable history and legacy are rare, and the wines they produce are nothing short of precious. Just about a mile down from ACME HQ, there is a heritage, head-trained, eight-acre vineyard planted by legendary Napa pioneer George Belden Crane in the 1800’s. A group of friends (winemaker Kevin Fox, and friends, Bryan Sandoli, Darryl Browman and Dave Phinney) teamed up with a common goal to preserve this piece of viticultural history and produce a wine that both represented and respected that history. Of the eight acres in production, approximately four acres of old vine Zinfandel are one of G.B. Crane’s original plantings. Yes, that means that this four-acre block has been continuously farmed for nearly one hundred and thirty years. Established plantings of Petite Sirah and Merlot round out the site. In 2012, all of these blocks were vinified separately and aged in 100% French oak. After a year in barrel the individual wines were assessed and the blending process began. The result is a wine that combines the vibrant warmth of the Zinfandel with the power and structure of Petite Sirah. And as it does so perfectly, the Merlot adds a silky, polished texture that gracefully completes the long finish. Congrats, G.B. Crane, you are ACME’s wine of the year!
