Check this out, interesting stuff :) Around 600BC there was a guy called Dyfynwall Moelmud, who stopped all the fighting between the tribes and drew up a series of laws, based on the observance of nature and the needs of people, ultimately a Druidic law, as that would be the overriding principle of the time - observation and science largely... no agenda, just sensible laws. These laws were seen as good by all the people, and people liked them because they were fair. They allowed people to do and have what they needed to get on and have a relaxed, enjoyable life - to the point where they had so much spare time on their hands, the UK went through a form of renaissance... we flourished, developed trade routes, increased our wealth and became the centre of learning for the entire continent. People came here from a VAST number of places and our documents spell this out quite clearly - we were seen as wise and good for the next 1600 years - this is the time of a vast number of heroes, legends, myths and stories that have shaped our entire culture, developing what is now known as the natural law - this is what the whole freeman concept is slowly starting to realise, that our culture is that of free people... from this fairly ancient time, those laws became ingrained in our way of doing things, because even the subsequent invaders started to understand, that a change to these freedoms would be, ultimately, a threat to the indigenous people, and they wouldnt put up with it because our culture doesnt allow for it... and that is where our Common law comes from - it comes from our culture rooted in the laws of an ancient King, inspired by the Druids who observed and applied instead of controlled and hoped. Merlin, Myrddin Emrys - yeah, he was a Druid - but more on that in a little while. Fast forward to around 55AD, not long after Jesus went back to the middle east from studying with the Druids (hence the difference in the bible, old and new testaments, despite being kinda compatible it is still a little different, but we identify with Jesus, because he was ultimately taught our culture, which he saw as superior and took back to the middle east - oh! How things change!... So, we get invaded by the Romans... they didnt move in and colonise the place, they just imposed an administration on us, so that they could effectively enslave the population for taxation, fines, rules etc - they civilised us essentially, in the name of progress, but in reality, it was to get the ability to tax us, that they were after - something we had never experienced before. We kinda put up with it, because of all the new shiny technology that they brought with them, but a few knew that something was wrong - Prasutagus and his wife Boudicca initially welcomed the Romans for trade, but the trade agreement started to turn sour, because the Iceni (the tribe) were not easily being civilised into taxation... so, the Romans killed Prasutagus, raped Boudiccas daughters in front of her, while they tied her to a pole and flogged her with a whip... she lost her mind, went mental and vowed to deal with these monsters who were only following orders... see, the Roman soldiers didnt really care, because they were not their people - one thing the Romans learned early on, always use foreign forces in new lands (of course, we now have EU police here, operating on exactly the same principle). So, because it doesnt sit well with the indigenous people, we eventually get pissed off, because it just culturally isnt our way of doing things. Realising that this Druidic system was the problem, you end up with the Battle of Menai, or Mona (Anglesey as it is now called). Where the Romans try to do as much damage as possible to the system and eradicate the concepts that the Druids preach or practice (Druids didnt write things down, they preferred to tell moral tales and legends, to instill the ideas into peoples heads - they believed that if things were written, it gave you an excuse to forget them) by trying to wipe them out. But, our system was cultural and engrained in our way of life, so it survived in the vast majority of the population... (remember, the Romans only brought administrators and army - there was no mass immigration). OK, so Rome collapses, we get a period of relative unrest, nothing as crazy as you are led to believe at school - this wasnt a dark age, it was anything but - our culture was still there, people remembered the laws, but we had a couple of new foes to deal with; the Anglo Saxons initially, a few of them move here because they wanted to be able to settle. We let them, if they followed our rules, but the rules were not written down and the Anglo Saxons didnt quite get it, because they had no copy to refer to... so along comes Alfred the Great - He then sends out his justiciars to discover what the law was, so that it can be written down and they can follow it... they adopted it too, because they knew it was good. So, we have the Codex Alfredii as a result - a few tweaks, here and there, to make it sit better with the Anglo Saxon way of doing things, but largely it was preserved on paper - even if it didnt sit quite right, culturally, it was still Great that he did that, and saw off the Vikinger - so yeah, he gets the title that Moelmud should also have been granted. So, as a result of this new concept of writing stuff down that was brought here by the Christian church, now developed from the Torah and the Druidic teachings of Jesus, passed through Rome and picking up new habits on the way... not quite compatible with us, but based on the same teachings of equality and freedom - so we adopt some of it and kick out the rest, causing a rift with the Catholic church and the creation of the Church of England... that is the very short and basic version. Now you get the day of doom - 1066... the Normans come rolling in. See, Europe has always been somewhat totalitarian - not something that sits well with us, they are not culturally free, their story is somehow broken, they just dont have the same traditions as us, so they ultimately live under a despotic rule more easily... along with the rest of the world. This little island fortress, has managed to resist that, for thousands of years - simply because, its an island... it wasnt as easily subdued, but you get what I mean. Anyway, the Normans, with their totalitarian methods, steal all the land from the people, slap castles in everywhere and start dictating by the sword and prima nocturne... but again, you see - it wasnt a mass immigration, it was theft of our efforts again - more taxation being taken, so that they could make effort into money, and send it back to Europe - You get the 1100 Charter of Liberties at this point, which proves that they are trying to be accepted by our population - if they were trying to get acceptance from their own, non-Druidic society, it wouldnt have been needed!!! They start then trying to force their society onto us, creating a two-tier system, which is still reflected in our language (beef vs cow, pig vs pork etc) because the people who farmed it called it something different to the people who stole it from us by tax and ate it at the table... that two tier system still exists, but you know it, you dont need me to tell you that. Then you have all the Spanish Armada stuff, a whole series of wars where other people try to invade, but cant... and of course, you start to run up to the period of the 1700s... which is coming soon.
