Check your registration – Alice Springs Police A recent traffic operation on the Stuart Highway south of Alice Springs resulted in 13 vehicles being detected as unregistered in just two hours. Superintendent Travis Wurst said it was a disturbing trend. “Responsibility rests with the driver of the vehicle. “If you are driving an unregistered vehicle there is no third party insurance coverage, this will expose you to very expensive damage costs if your vehicle is involved in a crash that causes injuries. “The crash doesn’t even have to be your fault. After all, if your vehicle is unregistered and subsequently, uninsured, it shouldn’t be on a public street. “The other thing to consider is, would your personal insurance company cover your vehicle and any other vehicle damaged in a crash if you are driving the vehicle while breaking the law? “Excuses such as ‘I didn’t receive a notice’ or ‘I don’t have a label to remind me anymore’ will not save you from a hefty fine or from your vehicle being immediately taken off the road. “The Northern Territory Motor Vehicle Registry no longer issue registration labels for all motor vehicles, however there are some things you can do to assist you to ensure your registrations remain current. “If you have a ‘Smart Phone’, there is a free application called “NTREGO” which you can download. This allows you to enter your registration number and it will not only give you the expiry date, but will also offer you the opportunity to put a reminder on the phone to advise you prior to the due date. The application also gives you the opportunity to re-register the vehicle on-line if there is no inspection required. You can even renew your driver’s licence on the same application. “You can go online to the Department of Transport Rego Check site and register your vehicle there. “Another tip is put a reminder on you fridge with your registration numbers and their expiry dates. You could put a similar reminder somewhere in your vehicle, perhaps on your sun visor. “Or put a reminder in your calendar on your mobile phone, tablet or computer. “You can have your vehicle inspected and pay for your registration renewal up to 6 weeks in advance of the due date. “Please do not expose yourself to potentially thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs, depending on the extent of injuries, if you were to have a crash,” Superintendent Wurst said.
