Checked out Oriental Pearl today. Ambiance and decor are classic Chinese restaurant; this place would fit right in on Wentworth Ave. in Chicagos Chinatown. Definitely a cut above other local offerings. THAT is where the similarities end, however! The menu is the bare bones version of that offered by strip mall Chinese restaurants in small towns across America. Just the basics. No Peking Duck, no Hong Kong Steak, no blue crabs with scallion and ginger sauce, ...no interesting House Specials. Just the bare bones basics. The food quality is just okay at best. The prices, however, are totally out of line!!! $11.45 for egg foo young? Really?! Thats like 5 bucks above the going rate! Tried the egg drop soup ($5.65!), virtually tasteless. The House Special chow mein, which I was promised came with pan-fried noodles, was more of a lo mein. Soggy soft noodles mixed in. The shrimp in it were (obviously) the precooked salad shrimp variety offered in plastic bags in the grocery store frozen food section. The staff, on the other hand, was friendly and prompt. A pleasant dining experience, food aside. All in all, Id say Oriental Pearl is a good choice if youre looking for a Chinatown experience and not a real connoisseur of Chinese food. Otherwise, youre probably better off somewhere else.
