Cheers Alex Tebble! Instructions: List ten books that have helped shape you as a human being then tag ten people. (I also said how they shaped me or reviewed them, though you dont have to.) 1. Private Peaceful - Michael Morpurgo. 2. One for sorrow, Two for Joy - Clive Woodall 3. His Dark Materials trilogy - Philip Pullman 4. Helliconia Trilogy - Brian Aldiss 5. Pushing Ice - Alastair Reynolds 6. Tau Zero - Poul Anderson 7. The Catcher in the Rye - J. D. Salinger 8. Notebooks of a Naked Youth - Billy Childish 9. Chasm City - Alastair Reynolds 10. Watership Down - Richard Adams Private Peaceful has undoubtedly had more of an impact on me than any other book Ive read, I dont know how many times I have read it and it still has an emotional impact on me every time, I have never not finished it in one sitting. One for Sorrow and His Dark Materials are both extremely good reads, and so different from anything else Ive read. Both are incredible stories, each with its own personal impact, Ill have to pick them both up and read them for the third and fourth times respectively. The Helliconia Trilogy; the best books I have ever read! Also some of the longest, in pages and scope! Spanning a thousand years, this epic tells of the rise and fall of civilizations. Pushing Ice was the first Hard SF book I read, and led to Tau Zero which is described as the ultimate Hard SF novel, Hard SF is defined as being true to real science, no laser battles and faster than light travel here, journeys between stars are long and dangerous. Both grand in scope, Pushing Ice reaches a dying universe, whilst Tau Zero witnesses its rebirth. Tau Zero sits with Helliconia in my top three favourite books and set me on a course that might hopefully one day see me writing my own hard SF book. The Catcher in the Rye is a book where almost nothing happens, and yet I could relate to the protagonist as he found himself in New York. I could almost be him. And then there is Notebooks of a Naked Youth, which is the most gritty, true to life account of a young man that I have ever read. Its quite disgusting, but also refreshing. Chasm City sticks with the Hard SF genre and is the second book in my top ten by Alastair Reynolds. Here we have a universe where all men and women are neither good nor evil on a world which has been struck by a plague that effects the machines the world relied on. This book had the best twist of any novel I have ever read and sits with Helliconia and Tau Zero in my top three. Finally Watership Down, like One for Sorrow, is a story about animals that feel love, hate, lust, pain, emotions just like men, and both have reinforced my disgust towards killing animals, for any reason. If Ive inspired anybody to read any of these novels, give me a shout, I own all of these books, sometimes twice! My nominations are: George Worrall, Dustine Walker, Jimi Lever, Jeni Ard, Sam Spencer, James Siggee, Jamie West, Josephine Dodson, Thomas Allen, Caitlin Read.
