Cheers to Roberta Smith for her review of Painting Forever at MoMA. Here I want to highlight one detail but it is one among many Smith raises: Less cheering is this demographic detail: With one exception, all the older artists are women, all the younger are men. And only three are not white. There is no excuse for this. Even 50 years ago it would not have been difficult to have more women (Elaine de Kooning, Nancy Spero, Joan Mitchell and Alma Thomas, to name a few. The relative absence of black painters at that time was due to lack of opportunity arising from racism and poverty, but even that didnt stop Alma Thomas). Also many artistic people in the African-American community were busy making a revolution in music). So whats is the excuse now at the worlds most famous museum for modern art? If truth be told, one could fill the same show with only black female artists, each one deserving of the recognition. nytimes/2014/12/12/arts/design/the-forever-now-a-survey-of-contemporary-painting-at-moma.html
