Chelsea Transfer News/Rumours Update – 3 July 2013 1. Mikel out to Galatasaray? Galatasaray are resuming talks with Chelsea over a £16m move for Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel. The anchorman joined the Blues in 2006 – signed by Jose Mourinho – after a protracted transfer saga involving Manchester United and Norwegian side Lyn Oslo. But he may depart after six years on his first Chelsea manager’s return to the club, with the Turkish giants poised to snap him up. Stalwart: Midfielder Mikel has been at Stamford Bridge since joining in 2006 as a 19-year-old from Lyn Oslo The deal would see Mikel reunited with Didier Drogba, who joined Galatasaray last season after leaving Chelsea for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua. Mikel has four years remaining on his deal at Stamford Bridge, but admitted his future is unclear while on international duty with Nigeria at the Confederations Cup. He said: ‘I have a four-year contract with Chelsea, but you know, in football you can never guess, one day you are here, the next day you might leave.’ 2. Real Madrid to rival Chelsea for Matic: The 24-year-old midfielder, who has a £42m release clause written into his contract, attracted interest from newly promoted Ligue 1 side Monaco, although there hasn’t been much movement on that front.Matic had also been linked with Manchester United, with his agent professing he wasn’t surprised that his client was linked with such a big club. But now, it seems Real Madrid could thwart Chelsea in their pursuit of Matic. A report by Portuguese paper A Bola indicates Blues boss Jose Mourinho has demand that a possible deal for Matic be settled as quickly as possible. Jose Mourinho is reportedly desperate to close out a deal for Matic Chelsea face stiff competition from Real Madrid for Nemanja Matic They go on to purport that Real Madrid are prepared to offer up to £25m for his services.Matic clocked up 39 appearances in all competitions last season for Benfica, who finished runners-up to Porto in the Portuguese Liga. 3. Chelsea make move for van Ginkel: Chelsea have held talks with Vitesse Arnhem midfielder Marco van Ginkel about a move to Stamford Bridge. The 20-year-old has met Blues boss Jose Mourinho and will return to the Dutch club on Thursday, when discussions will take place about his future. Marco van Ginkel joined Vitesse Arnhem when he was just seven years old and has progressed through their academy. He made his debut for the club in April 2010 and his international debut came in November last year. Van Ginkel’s main concern is over how much first-team football he would get. He is on the fringe of the Dutch national side and has hopes of making the squad for next year’s World Cup – and is said to be valued at about £8m. Van Ginkel joined Vitesse’s academy as a seven-year-old in 1999 and came through the ranks before making his debut for the club in April 2010. He emerged as one of the team’s star performers last season and was a regular as he helped the club secure fourth place in the Dutch top flight. Van Ginkel, whose current contract with Vitesse runs until June 2015, could become Chelsea’s second summer signing following the £18m arrival of Germany international forward Andre Schurrle from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. Mourinho is in charge of the Blues for the second time following his return as the club’s manager earlier this summer after parting company with Real Madrid. 4. PSG bid for Cavani: Chelsea will have to smash the British transfer record again if they are to land prime target Edinson Cavani. Blues will need to go to £53million after French moneybags Paris Saint-Germain began an all-out assault to persuade Cavani to leave Napoli for Ligue 1. And with the French champions prepared to meet Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis’ demands for the full buy-out clause written into the Uruguay striker’s contract, it leaves Chelsea facing a significant dilemma. While Jose Mourinho wants the Uruguayan, believing he is the ideal line-leader for next season’s revamped team, Chelsea have signaled they will not be held to ransom. The Stamford Bridge outfit were burned by the record £50m fee they were forced to pay Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011 and do not want history to repeat itself, especially with the Spaniard now set for a cut-price exit. Although Chelsea are willing to meet Cavani’s demands for a five- year contract worth around £7.5m – £150,000 per week they have so far refused to go above £45m. The Blues’ strategy was a belief that, despite Napoli’s insistence that the full contract clause is met, the Italian side would eventually come to the table, especially if Torres could be included as a make-weight in the deal.
